Cosmetic tattooing, also called permanent makeup or micro-pigmentation, is a technique where pigments are implanted into the skin to enhance or define features such as eyebrows, eyeliner, and lips. The goal is to create a natural, polished look that lasts for years, reducing the need for daily makeup.
This process uses a tattoo machine or manual tool to deposit pigment into the upper layers of skin. Results can range from soft and natural to more defined, depending on your preferences.
Permanent makeup is ideal for anyone wanting to save time on their beauty routine, or for those with allergies to traditional makeup or conditions that make makeup application difficult.
Results vary based on technique, skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare. While pigment does fade over time, this is still a tattoo and considered permanent.
Touch-ups and refreshers are recommended every 2–3 years to maintain shape and color.
After the initial session and touch up, most clients at Eternal Alchemy are able to go 2-3+ years between refresher appointments!
Please note that healing and retention vary from person to person. Final results cannot be guaranteed due to the nature of skin as it heals. A follow-up appointment is recommended after your initial appointment to perfect your results.
Not everyone is eligible for cosmetic tattooing. You are NOT a candidate if you:
• Have had Botox/Dysport within 14 days of your appointment.
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Have taken Accutane within the past 12 months.
• Have active skin conditions on or near the brow area (rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, acne, sunburn, etc.).
• Are on blood-thinning medications (consult your doctor before stopping any medication).
All clients must be 18 years or older (no exceptions).
If you’re unsure, email photos and questions to [email protected]
Several factors influence pigment retention and overall results:
• Oily Skin: Increased oil production can cause hair strokes to blur and pigment to fade very quickly, or not stick at all.
• Sun Exposure: UV rays break down pigment; always protect your brows with SPF once fully healed to increase longevity.
• Excessive Bleeding: This can cause pigment loss and uneven healing. While bleeding is not entirely in our control, it is important that you follow before care instructions to help minimize bleeding. This includes avoiding blood thinning medications and alcohol 24 hours before your procedure.
Improper Pre & Post-Care: Not following the given pre and post care instructions will greatly diminish your healed results. I can only control what happens inside my studio, so please come prepared beforehand and follow all instructions exactly afterwards for the best results.
Most clients report little to no pain throughout their procedure. While pain tolerance varies between clients, topical Lidocaine is used throughout the procedure to make sure you’re comfortable. It may be hard to believe, but many clients even fall asleep during their session!
Preparing for your appointment is just as important for good healed results as post care. Failure to follow pre-care may result in you being sent home the day of your appointment, so please read the following carefully! You coming prepared to you appointment means better healed results and a better overall experience.
Brows (2 Weeks Before):
• No Botox 2 weeks before or after treatment.
• No brow lamination or tinting.
• Stop Retinol, Vitamin E, Fish Oils, and exfoliants near brows.
• Avoid waxing, tweezing, or threading.
Lips (2 Weeks Before):
• Lip fillers must be done 2 weeks before or 8 weeks after your lip blush appointment.
• Drink plenty of water to hydrate lips.
• Start exfoliating nightly with a lip scrub + lip balm or mask.
• If prone to cold sores, ask your doctor for an antiviral prescription (Zovirax, etc.).
All PMU Procedures (24 Hours Before):
• Avoid alcohol, caffeine, tea, and energy drinks.
• Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, or blood thinners (unless prescribed—consult your doctor first)
Day of Appointment:
• You may have caffeine in the morning as long as it doesn’t make you jittery or anxious.
• Avoid exercise. Exercising increases blood flow and will cause excessive bleeding, leading to poor healed results.
Makeup:
* You are welcome to come to your appointment with or without makeup on. We will be taking lots of photos, so come however you are most comfortable. If you regularly fill in your brows, coming with at least your brows filled in helps me see your regular shape.
* Bring your brow makeup. If you have a specific product you love, bring it along!
* The studio can get chilly at times, so feel free to bring a jacket if you get cold.
RELAX! Feeling nervous is normal. We are going to work together to create your dream brows! Take a deep breath and get excited!
If you have previous work, a virtual consultation form is required before booking. We typically only work over other artists’ work if it’s at least 50-90% faded. If your brows are too dark or saturated, we may recommend removal first in order to have the best possible results.
• Mild redness or swelling is normal and will subside in 24 hours.
• The treatment area will appear darker and warmer for the first few days—this is normal!
• Light flaking will occur around days 3–7. Do NOT pick or scratch.
• Final healed results take 4–6 weeks. We’ll perfect your permanent makeup at the touch-up session.
• Keep brows dry for 10–14 days. This means keeping them dry in the shower, and avoiding sweating, saunas, and steam for the next 10-14 days. No working out until all flaking has finished.
• Cleanse gently morning and night for 5 days with the provided cleanser.
• Apply a thin rice grain size amount of aftercare balm as directed.
• No makeup can go on or around the brows for 14 days. You may wear makeup around the brows, but leave at least one inch around them at all times to prevent infection.
• Avoid sun exposure and skincare products containing acids or retinol for 2 weeks.
Do not touch, pick, rub, or scratch the brows. Do not pick the scabs or flakes as they come off, this will remove the pigment and lead to patchiness and scarring.
No anti-aging or acne products on the brows ever (anything with Retinol, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, etc.)
• You’ll receive a complete aftercare kit and a sheet with the following after care instructions at your appointment.
Most clients need a touch-up, also called a perfecting session, 6–12 weeks after the initial appointment. This session allows us to adjust color and shape and fill in any areas that didn’t retain pigment.
Permanent makeup enhances your natural features but does not replace makeup completely. PMU provides a base shape and color, but some clients still use makeup for special occasions or a bolder look.
We do not require in-person consultations, but all new clients must complete a virtual consultation form with photos before booking. If you have old work or corrections, email clear photos first.
